Reverend Richard D. Shaw
Reverend Richard D. Shaw is a native of Marion, Alabama. He began his ministry at the Fairfield CME church in Halsell, AL and was licensed as a local preacher in 1997.
Reverend Shaw is joyfully married to the lovely, former Tondelenia Mechelle Bryant (Toni) whom he met as a student at Stillman College. Richard and Toni have enjoyed and cherished twenty years of marriage. They have three children: Sherika, Richard II and Trentyn.
He has completed academic studies at Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Al; Alabama State University in Montgomery, Al; and Governor’s State University in University Park, IL. Areas of concentration includes: Broadcast Communications, Speech Communications & Business Administration. Pastor Shaw is a 2011 graduate of Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, IL where he earned the Masters of Divinity Degree. He was a Bold Leaders Scholarship recipient at Garrett-Evangelical.
Reverend Shaw is an ordained Elder of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church and a minister in Full Connection. Rev. Shaw’s pastorate began in the 5th Episcopal District; at that time, under the leadership of Bishop Paul A. G. Stewart, Sr. He later served under Bishop Lawrence L. Riddick, III. He has served in the Southeast Alabama Annual Conference and the Birmingham Annual Conference. His pastorate in the 5th includes: Shady Grove CME in Cromwell, AL (Supply 1998-1999); Little Walker CME in Butler, AL (1999-2000); Union Chapel CME in Ward, AL (1999-2001; Ebenezer CME in Lochapoka, AL (2001-2004) and the Mt. Zion CME Church in Alpine, AL (2004-2006).
In 2006 He was transferred to the Michigan-Indiana Annual Conference under Bishop Stewart and assigned to the J. Claude Allen CME Church in Dixmoor, IL where he served for three years. In July of 2009 he was transferred to the Southeast Missouri, Illinois & Wisconsin Annual Conference and assigned to the Walls Memorial CME in Chicago. On July30, 2010 he was assigned to the St. Matthew CME Church in Milwaukee Wisconsin.
Rev. Richard D. Shaw has served in other capacities of our Zion. He has served on the Ministerial Examination Committee in the Southeast Alabama, Birmingham, Michigan-Indiana and Southeast Missouri Annual Conferences. He briefly served as the accounts receivable auditor of the 5th Episcopal District and statistician for the Birmingham Region; under Bishop L. L. Reddick, III. He has served as the administrative assistance under (at that time) Presiding Elder Leo Douglas. He was elected as a delegate to the 2006, 2010 and 2014 General Conference. He has served on the Finance Boards of various regional districts. Presently, as a member of the Joint Board of Finance, Regional Trustee Board and the Economic Develop Committee for the Southeast Missouri, Illinois and Wisconsin Region. Although he was not able to attend, he was selected by Bishop P. A. G. Stewart to represent at the World Methodist Conference in South Africa.
Past Community Involvement
In the past he has served on the board of the Lee County Chapter of NAACP and the Board of Directors for the Dallas County Head Start Program. He has served as a member of the Lee County Adult Literacy Program of Lee county Alabama, Chicago South Suburban Association to End Homeless, GEBS (Garrett Evangelical Black Seminarians), and active with the CBE (Church in the Black Experience) while attending Garrett.
Present Community Involvement
Reverend Shaw currently serves on the Advisory Board for the Blood Center of Milwaukee, Faith-Based Community Committee for the Children’s Hospital of Milwaukee, MICAH (Milwaukee Inner-City Congregations Allied for Hope) board member, representative to the Wisconsin Council of Churches (instrumental in the CME church becoming the second African American denomination to receive membership in December 2012). He serves on the public relations committee for aging. He chairs the MICAH 53206 Mass Incarceration Committee. Represented the CME Church in Madison Wisconsin, as one of the speakers for the 11x15 campaign. This month he will give the message for the Economic Revival in Milwaukee to address high poverty, mass incarceration and low wages. Reverend Shaw is a members of the Advisory Board for North Division High School in Milwaukee.
Reverend Shaw is a member of the Milwaukee Branch of NAACP, National Action Network (MIL), Rainbow Push and a member of Kappa Alpha Psi, Frat. INC.
Awards & Honors
Reverend Shaw was award the Parish Promise Award 2011 from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. He was saluted and honored by the Milwaukee Community Journal at their 36th Anniversary Celebration on August 5, 2012 for contributions towards a stronger community. Most recently, he was honored at the 2013 CME Pastor’s Conference and Phillips School of Theology Founder’s day celebration, receiving the Outstanding Ministry Award.
